Optional What’s Your Story Extension

Welcome to the program

What’s In Module 6 – What’s Your Story

In this Module 6 What’s Your Story Extension of Your Type of Style we’re going to get into the dynamic nature of Psychological Type in more depth.

This What’s Your Story Extension is drawing heavily on the work of Sue Blair of Personality Dynamics.  Sue is a friend of 16 Style Types, she was our Effective Stylist ESTJ style muse, and is a leader in the international psychological type community for her presentations, workshops, and resources which are highly practical and intended to help type practitioners and enthusiasts to apply type in their lives.

Sue has put together a model of dynamic type using a series of user-friendly Archetype Function Roles.  These are explained on the pages following.

The video that accompanies this resource is essential viewing to get the most of this resource:  the video will contextualize this document so you understand how and why it’s put together the way that it is, and will help you get the best use from it.

The accompanying video will also likely answer questions you may have about the dynamic nature of your Type using the Archetype theory and model.

A few important things to note about this Module 6 What’s Your Story Extension:

1.This resource is an optional extra.  You don’t have to participate with this material should you not wish to, if it doesn’t interest you, or you find it’s beyond your current level of Type knowledge and journey right now.  It will not affect your participation in the remainder of Your Type of Style if you don’t participate or engage with this material.

2.The concepts in this resource are sophisticated and complex.  There would be Psychological Type practitioners around the world who would find these concepts a challenge.  This is advanced territory!

3.We are interweaving the theories of Type Dynamics and Archetypes in this optional extra resource.  There are any number of ways these two models can be integrated – this is just one way of doing it.

4.If you wish to explore these concepts further, be aware that on the Your Type of Style Facebook Group there are those who do not wish to participate in conversations on this topic, and since it is not a formal part of the program, we ask you to be sensitive to any discussions you wish to have using the Your Type of Style Facebook Group.

5.If you wish to explore further, direct contact with Jill and Imogen from 16 Style Types, or with Sue Blair from Personality Dynamics (the originator of much of the material in this resource) is likely to be a good next step.

6.This is copyright material, and reflects countless hours of effort to bring to you in this format.  We ask you to respect that and not to share this material beyond the Your Type of Style program.  This material is provided for your personal use only.

The Function Archetypes – Unravelled and Explored

The Type journey is different for us all. This is bound to be the case by the very nature of our diversity.

This Module 6 What’s Your Story Extension represents a new perspective on an increasingly referred to analogy of Psychological Type. It is an attempt to shed some light on the complexity of Archetype theory and make it more relatable.

This resource is provided as an invitation for exploration more than a statement of fact or a declaration of immutable truth.  You are invited to engage with the material with this in mind.

The eight Jungian functions elegantly describe four ways of perceiving information and four ways of evaluating these perceptions. The 16 Psychological Type codes enable us to put our use of these functions into a pattern which is consistently experienced by many.

The overlay of an Archetype for each of these functions is a very interesting study. If it holds true then there is something we can all learn from it.

Many questions arise when diving into this theory of dynamic Type. When looking at how each of the functions influence your life a key question is What is this function telling you to do or asking of you? This becomes more specific when both function and Archetype are combined, which is what this resource does.

story

What’s Your Story?

Type is dynamic. It is an energy system that is complex and nuanced.

As we each narrate our own life experience, we will all craft and tell very different stories.

Using Type as one lens through which to craft a meaningful and positive story, some questions you may wish to include in your narrative might include:

  • How do each of my functions influence my life?
  • What influence do the archetypes have on the unfolding story of my life?
  • What are the intriguing patterns emerging that give my story shape and direction? What are the specific details that give it color and interest?
  • What hurdles and stumbling blocks have I faced, and how do I understand them better now, with Type as a guide?
  • Where have I come from?  Where am I now?  Where might I be headed?
  • Where, how, why and what impact is using Type as a lens part of my story-making?

We hope you are intrigued to explore more about your story, using Type and specifically the Function Archetypes, to provide an additional layer of interest and insight into your continuing and evolving story.

Without a simple explanation, or framework, it can be challenging to start the conversation.  And this is where this resource comes in.

Let’s Get Going

This resource is organized in a deliberate format.  There are three main sections.

Firstly you’ll find a few overview pages which introduce you to the eight Function Archetypes, giving you more details as each page appears.

Next you will find eight pages – one for each of the eight functions of:

  • Extraverted Sensing
  • Introverted Sensing
  • Extraverted iNtuition
  • Introverted iNtuition
  • Extraverted Thinking
  • Introverted Thinking
  • Extraverted Feeling
  • Introverted Feeling

Each of these pages outlines how that function “shows up” in each of the “function stack” positions, from dominant (1st) position through to the 8th position.  You’ll note in grey in the margins the two Style Types which “sit” at this position.  For example with Extraverted iNtuition (Ne), ISTJ and ISFJ have Ne in the inferior (or 4th) position – The Balancer; for ISTP and ISFP it is in 7th position – the Devious Child; and of course for ENTP and ENFP it is in dominant position – The Controller; and so on.  You’ll get the hang of how these pages are organized once you spend a little time with them!

Finally you will find 16 pages for the 16 Style Types.  This is where you may wish to spend most of your time – reading through the page for your Style Type, and exploring how each of the 8 functions in your function stack are showing up.  We have provided some Exploration questions for you to discover more.
