Grooming as Self-Care

Section Progress:
grooming

Grooming means different things to different people.  The very word “grooming” no doubt has dozens of personal meanings, and we’ll discuss what it means to you next.

To set a baseline of what we mean when we say grooming, here are the main elements we will be focusing on in this Module:

  • Hair – styling, color, upkeep, every time and effort required
  • Skin care – including products and your routine
  • Make up – do you wear it, how much, how often, what style and approach
  • Perfume and scent – what choices you make and preferences you have
  • Hygiene – cleanliness, the human body and the 5 senses, body hair
  • Nails – hands and feet

If there are other elements that you include in your definition of grooming, please replicate the Exploration pages for those, and add them to your self-discovery.

Our viewpoint is there is a minimum standard of grooming that revolves around hygiene that applies to everyone.  Beyond that, your approach to grooming is an individual and personal pursuit, and likely is Style Type-related in some way. The goal of this Module is to explore what grooming is and means to you, in the light of your Style Type.

We will be referring to your Style Type Report and previous Modules, so be sure to have those resources at the ready as we get going!

CONSIDER THIS:  Grooming signals something significant – to ourselves (firstly and most importantly) and also to others.

If you’ve ever watched a makeover show and paid attention to what’s really going (trying to avoid all those figurative sequins they’re throwing in your eyes!), you will have noticed that a very large part of the transformation is down to a flattering hairstyle and amazing makeup with a lovely clean set of teeth.  These things do a lot of the “heavy lifting” when it comes to turning someone “from drab to fab” as those shows are wont to claim.

Grooming is also something of a barometer, signalling how we are feeling within and about ourselves.  It is often the first thing that goes downhill, gets demoted or even completely disappears when we are sick, tired, overworked or stressed.   It can feel like a bridge too far to pay attention to those seemingly little things when other more pressing things are taking up all our time, attention and precious life energy.

Good grooming can also signal that we are “together” mentally, that we are in control of our life.  Whereas poor grooming can signal we are a little out of control, or out of balance in some way.

It’s now time to open your Module 9 PDF Page 6 and start on the grooming explorations!  There are also a series of grooming playshops in this module that you may find enjoyable too!
