Advanced Style
As we move through life, our style needs change. What we wore and required of our style in our 20s is not the same as our needs and requirements in our 70s, not to mention all the decades in between!
As you move through your life it’s important to be aware of how the various changes you are experiencing are impacting on your style choices. Changes in fashion are one aspect to consider but fashion trends are sometimes the least of it!
As you move through life, these are some of the personal changes that are likely to impact your style:
- Your coloring changes as you age and your color contrast levels can also change.
- Your body shape changes. Hormonal change including menopause affect body shape
- Your face and skin change. Your face may become softer in shape and your skin may become less bright
- Your hair changes. The color will likely change and go to grey, silver, white and the texture of your hair may change too
- Your personal style values change. What may have mattered to you when you were young may no longer mean so much. Your values influence what you choose to wear and focus on style-wise
- Your lifestyle changes. You may move into semi or full retirement from work, your geography may change, as well as changes to your relationships
Strategies
There are numerous ways you can continue to be stylish as you move through life and your physicality and other aspects change for you.
Imogen’s comprehensive post on the truth about how aging affects your style is a great place to start your exploration into how your style needs can be met through the many changes you’ll experience in your life.
- Coloring changes: Colors that flatter may be softer and you may need lower contrast combinations (both color and value contrast) and different kinds of prints/patterns.
- Body shape changes: . Silhouettes, fabrics, and cuts may need to be less constricting and more flowing to feel and look flattering.
- Face changes: Texture, sheen, and pattern are important considerations – you may need to change all of them in small but significant ways.
- Hair changes: Patterns, texture, and contrast are the style elements to factor in here.
- Personal style values changes: There are a number of important factors to consider here – the Style Values exploration (Module 2) is a great touchstone in this area.
- Lifestyle changes: The explorations in Module 11 as well as those explored in the Module 8 Extension are most relevant here.
